3 Simple Steps To Creating Interviews That Sell

[mc id="1835" type="video"]3-simple-steps-to-create-interviews-that-sell[/mc]

One of the questions we are most frequently asked by our Platinum coaching students is ‘How can we create interviews with guest experts?’

In the video above Daniel and I discuss the 3 simple steps anyone can follow to create compelling, professional-sounding interviews that sell.

Plus, I also prove one important concept… you don’t have to be PERFECT either!!

However, there are several different options for which media to use for creating interviews, and here are our three absolute favourites…

1. Face-To-Face Interviews

This is perhaps the most impactful medium for conducting any interview. When the viewer sees yourself and the expert being interviewed on camera it immediately builds the ‘Know, Like, Trust’ factor immediately.

You can use either a mini hand-held video camera like a Flip Mino HD, or else only capture the audio using a digital audio recorder such as the high-end (but very cool) Edirol R09.

For a great example of a face-to-face video watch this interview Daniel conducted with ‘The Webinar King’ Steven Essa.

2. Skype Interviews

This is our personal favourite, however :) as Skype is a simply amazing tool for creating high-quality audio and now even video interview recordings!

The easiest way to use Skype is still to record the audio conversation between yourself and your guest. You can even record conference calls with 3 or more people on the line, as Daniel and I have done recently with great results.

Audio is still incredibly powerful, versatile and often far easier for people to consume. The CDs of the month that we send to our Gold Members and above are extremely popular as CDs are still the easiest way for most people to listen to recorded audio, for example by playing in the car on your way to and from work.

But Skype goes still further than audio, as you can now even record amazing-quality video calls between people as well! The interview Daniel and I recorded above was done via skype, with some specific recording software.

You can’t record audio or video ‘natively’ with Skype, you need some add-on software. But the small price to pay for an ‘add-on’ piece of software is a drop in the ocean compared to the value of being able to record unlimited high-quality audio and video recordings at will!

On PC the most popular is still ‘Pamela Profesional‘, while on Mac, Daniel and I can happily endorse a program called ‘Call Recorder‘ which does an excellent job.

3. Webinar Interviews

Webinars are absolutely amazing tools for conducting interviews with experts, as well as creating amazing, high-value products quickly and inexpensively.

Basically, if you want to learn about a particular topic or subject, then simply invite a guest expert who knows the subject onto a webinar that you hold!

Not only will you learn about the subject and get the best value from the expert, but you because webinars are ‘live events’ you can invite as many people as you like to join you on the the webinar at the same time… :)

Of course, not only will you get their contact details (email addres etc) to help build your own list, you can even charge people to attend the event, and record the whole thing through the webinar software (if you use GotoWebinar for example).

Webinars are certainly the most effective ways of conducting interviews with the purpose of selling products and services.

If you’d like to check out an example of an extremely successful webinar then why not check out the replay of our webinar with Steven Essa

Good luck with your interviews!

Really useful piece Guys! I love the way you model the 3 step process so clearly in this interview.
Can’t wait to start my own interview series.
    All the best, Andrew

    Hi Daniel,

In the section about GoToWebinar you said:

“Basically, if you want to learn about a particular topic or subject, then simply invite a guest expert who knows the subject onto a webinar that you hold!

Not only will you learn about the subject and get the best value from the expert, but you because webinars are ‘live events’ you can invite as many people as you like to join you on the the webinar at the same time…”

I have a few points to raise that you might be able to answer.

Firstly, most “experts” I’ve asked to interview have always been “too busy” or totally uninterested, even if you say you will promote them!

Secondly they say “well, what’s in in for me!”. Obvious question really, and when you’re just starting out, unless you pay them for their time, it’s a tough one to answer, which brings me on to my final question.

Finally, surely they must realise that if you record an interview via webinar for example, and they send it out to THEIR list, that you’ve just harvested THEIR list for your own purpose. How is this controlled? Usually they would realise and just say “No” to sending it out to their list. If they want you to send it out to YOUR list (and you might not have a list, especially if just starting out) then you’ve absolutely nothing to offer them really.

I like the strategy, it is viable, but at what stage in the internet marketing lifecycle? How many NOs must you get when first starting out before a YES comes your way and you are able to start building YOUR OWN list?

    Regards.
    Gareth

      Hi Gareth,
Many of our students who’ve been working closely under Steven Essa’s coaching have achieved this, so its totally possible. There wasn’t space in this post to go into an explanation about how to approach experts but here are 3 ways anyone can get guest interviews:

      1) If you go to http://www.rtir.com there are experts listed there who are WAITING to be contact to promote their book etc. They are hoping for radio and tv interviews but if you say you have a web audience many will also say yes to giving an interview.

      2) You can always ‘hire’ an expert by going on elance.com or guru.com and paying for an hour of their time. This is normally not expensive and you explain you’re going to ask them some questions and record the conversation – and that’s it.

      3) The first two options are obviously easier if you’re going to do a straight interview. If you want to do a webinar then you could invite them to be a Joint Venture partner. So, you and the expert split the revenues 50:50 of all sales made at the end of the webinar. This is one of our favourite models of all. Plus, you get to record the call and create a product and/or give it away to build a list.

But ultimately Gareth there are a TON of experts out there who are passionate about their subject and love to share their knowledge, often for free. If you approach them the right way, then you will often get a yes rather than a no but you WILL get some nos – that’s just part of life. Just reflect on whether you could improve your approach before moving on to the next one instead…

Once you’ve done this ONCE, you’ll wonder what the big deal was, honestly!

      Good luck
      James

@Brian – Thanks for the suggestion, we’re using skype as many people already have an account, plus we teach it to our students, but oovoo.com looks great for high-quality and especially 3-way (or more) video calls. Re: your question about the video, we’re having the Traffic and Conversion Summit videos professionally-edited next week so they should be available in a week or so.

@Andy – yes, there are quite a few pocket camcorders available to choose from now fortunately, thanks for the recommendation for the Zi8 :)

Hey James, that is so you! When we talked about sending out the video I thought it would be a link and there you go… but you made it into a whole ‘system’ for the guys… great! With this post they have ALL they need to do interviews! Including the right equipment and record them…. :-)

I am also really pleased how the video from skype came out. Technology is so awesome these days (I know you normally add – ‘when it works’)…

awesome… hope the volcano cloud clears up so that I can join you in the UK for Platinum.

all the best, great post – and see you soon

    Daniel
